officials will meet at 6 tonight in the university of south carolina's school of law auditorium. the event is sponsored by the black law students association and is free and open to the public. british actor alan rickman, whose career ranged from the royal shakespeare company to the "harry potter" films, has died. he was 69. rickman's family said today that the actor had died after a battle with cancer. trained at the prestigious royal academy of dramatic art, rickman was often cast as the bad guy. millions know him from the harry potter films, in which he played the dark arts teacher severus snape. rickman is survived by his partner rima horton, whom he married recently. three people were killed and three others seriously injured when an avalanche in the french alps hit a group of children on a school ski trip yesterday. candles have been lit outside a lyon high school after two of its students - a 14-year-old and a 16- year-old - died in the incident. they were among a group of ten

with their teacher. the teacher was taken into custody today, as prosecutors said they have launched an investigation for involuntary manslaughter, since witnesses say the students were skiing on a slop that was closed with an advisory posted. crews were out surveying the damage caused by a fire that ripped through an oil well in oklahoma on wednesday. crews say the damages total which include 22 oil tankers that were destroyed along with other equipment on site. officials say four different fire department crews were needed to battle the flames at the continental resources plant. no one was hurt. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. that militia standoff in oregon is just one example of people concerned about washington's control over federal lands out west. there's another.... less public... battle that's been brewing for years....over a bird! tracie potts reports a short line in the new federal budget specifically mentions the bird - the sage grouse. :14-:17

"if the sage grouse is in trouble - it means the broader ecosystem - this range area - is also in trouble." ranchers and others who use the land fear they may be in trouble too. that government restrictions to save the bird's habitat - make it harder for them to make a living. utah :27-:36 "you're stopping grazers - you're stopping energy development - you're stopping all the spinoffs that - the people who need jobs who live in those areas." the new federal budget prevents them from being listed as endangered... prompting more rules. ranchers argue regulations already in the works will be just as restrictive. utah :49-:53 "you'll draw up to a two mile radius around it and say you can't do any kind of grazing within that area." utah brolled "you're driving them out of business."

behityrone stevenson and dondre givens were arrested and charged with first-degree burglary and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. deputies responded to a call about an armed robbery at the campus corner apartments on campus drive. when investigators arrived, three men ran away. stevenson and given were caught immediately. the two men were denied bond in court yesterday. anyone with information on a third suspect is asked to call crimestoppers at 1-888-crime-sc. a sumter man was arrested following a child pornography investigation by the state attorney general's office. william hugh phillips is facing 15 counts of sexual exploitation of a minor. investigators say he exchanged files of child pornography by computer. he faces up to 10 years in prison. two lexington county residents were arrested

cory mickle and jerry haselden each face four counts of income tax evasion. mickle wrote a letter to his employer claiming to be exempt from state withholding taxes and didn't file an individual income tax return for years 2011 to 2014. haselden also claimed to be exempt from state withholding taxes, but then filed a 2011 tax return with fraudulent information and got a refund when he actually owed the state money. both are at the lexington county detention center. the city of columbia water works has issued a boil water advisory after an eight-inch water main broke in irmo. those of you on doncaster drive need to boil your water for at least one minute prior to drinking or cooking. also, any residents near the affected area who have lost water and/or water pressure should do the same until it's fixed. time now for an update on your weather. for that we turn to
